Ryan O'Connor
Senior Pastor
Ryan is married to Kelly since 2000, and they have 5 children – 3 adult children living
on the Sunshine Coast for work and studies, 2 in high school here in Cairns. Ryan
worked as a team leader in the Community Services and Care sector, specialising in
support for people who have severe communication difficulties and multiple support
needs.
He left this role in the early 2000’s to pursue theological studies, where he
met Rev. Dr Jim Gibson, the theology lecturer at Malyon College at the time. Their
ministry friendship led to a pastoral call to Salisbury Baptist Church, with Rev. Dr.
Gibson as Senior Pastor (full-time) and Malyon Theology Lecturer (part-time) while
Ryan worked as Associate Pastor (part-time) from 2006-2010. During this time he
completed a Bachelor of Theology through Malyon College. At the completion of the
degree, Jim encouraged Ryan to take up a Senior/Solo pastor role which led to the
call at Mulgrave Community Baptist Church in 2010. They remain friends to this day .
Tim Grant
Associate Pastor
Tim has been married to Vanessa since 2011, and they have 3 daughters.
Tim joined the team at Cairns South Baptist Church in 2024. He has 15 years of pastoral experience, and has served in youth and senior roles. His previous positions include Mount Isa Baptist Church and Tenthill Baptist Church. He has a Bachelor of Ministry and a Master of Arts in Theology, both from Malyon Baptist College.
He has also co-authored a book on the Baptist distinctive of ‘liberty of conscience’ titled ‘Defending Conscience.’
Steve MacFarlane
Elder
Steve is married to Jenny and they have 4 adult children, who reside in Texas, Perth, Brisbane and
Malanda, and they have eleven grand-children. They met in Normanton in 1977 when Steve was
working as a Police Officer and Jenny as a Teacher.
Steve spent 23 years in the Qld Police, after which he resigned and later went to uni and obtained a
law degree. He retired after practising law for about 14 years, the last seven of which he worked for
Aboriginal Legal Aid. He has a passion for defending the underdog and the less privileged.
He gave his life to the Lord over 45 years ago and has worshipped at the Cairns South Baptist Church
for the last ten years. He is a vocal and avid supporter of traditional Christian theology and values.
David Cook
Elder
David and Ros Cook have been associated with (MCBC) Cairns South Baptist Church since its foundation in 1991. They have lived on the southern side of Cairns all their married life and have three grown children, two wonderful daughters-in-law and six energetic grandchildren who all currently live locally. David has lived in Cairns most of his life and was baptised at Cairns Baptist Church, where he was active in youth work and Brigades as company captain. On transferring to MCBC David continued with Brigade and stepped into roles as home group leader, Worship leader and has served as deacon, and currently as an Elder for many years. Having spent the bulk of his working life as a Funeral Director, he is currently driving a Special Needs School Bus part time. On completing a Diploma of Christian Ministry and Theology David stepped into a voluntary role in 2016 as Queensland Fire and Emergency Service now Queensland Fire Department as Associate Chaplain in the Northern Region. A role he still currently fills.
